What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a prosthesis designed to replace the roots of missing teeth. The prothesis is surgically inserted and fused to the bone of the jaw or skull.
Once the prothesis is placed into the bone, the patient must allow 3 to 6 months on average for the body to heal depending on bone quality and health habits. More complex cases can take anywhere between 6 to 9 months on average. These cases may require bone grafting or patients may have lower bone density which increases healing time.
After healing, an abutment is attached to the implant. The replacement tooth is then added to the abutment completing the procedure.
What are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

A more natural look and feel
The biggest advantage of dental implants is their natural appearance and feel. Dental implants are designed to match the shape, color, and alignment of your existing teeth and offer more stability as they are secured to the jawbone.

Permanence
Dental implants are built to last and with proper care can remain strong and functional for a lifetime. Implants are reliable and can lead to better oral health in the long run compared to bridges or dentures.

Comfort
Compared to missing teeth or dentures, dental implants can restore the ability to chew harder foods without pain or embarrassment. There is no risk of slipping, rubbing, or soreness like dentures since dental implants are attached to the jaw.

Bone loss prevention
The area of where a tooth is missing in a jawbone will experience bone loss over time. This can lead to significant issues if left unaddressed and can negatively impact the appearance and structure of your face and your ability to chew food. Dental implants stimulate the bone and prevent bone loss.

Easier to protect your teeth
Other solutions such as bridges, may require filing down neighboring teeth to fit properly. At Woodhaven Smiles, we want to protect our patients’ natural teeth for as long as possible. Dental implants do not compromise neighboring teeth and are structurally sound. Brushing and flossing your teeth is easier with dental implants as well as they feel more natural than a bridge.
Are Dental Implants Right for Me?
Most adults missing one or more teeth can benefit from dental implants. Ideal candidates have healthy gums, good bone density in their jaw, and are in overall good health. If you have already begun experiencing bone loss in your jaw, a bone graft may be necessary before starting dental implant treatment. Smoking can affect healing. We recommend not smoking during the procedure and healing phase.
