Inlays and onlays are custom-made restorations used when a filling isn’t enough but a crown isn’t needed. They fit precisely to strengthen damaged or decayed teeth while preserving your natural tooth structure.
We take impressions of your tooth, remove decay, and place a custom restoration made from durable material. Inlays fit inside the tooth’s grooves; onlays cover a larger area for extra support and protection.
Inlays and onlays preserve more of your natural tooth while restoring strength and appearance. They’re long-lasting, custom-made, and help avoid more invasive procedures like crowns or extractions.
Inlays & Onlays
Custom restorations for damaged or decayed teeth.
Patients with moderate tooth damage or decay that a filling can’t repair—but doesn’t require a full crown—may need inlays or onlays. It’s ideal for preserving more natural tooth structure while restoring strength.
During the first visit, the tooth is cleaned and shaped, and an impression is taken. A temporary is placed. At the second visit, the permanent inlay or onlay is bonded. It’s a comfortable, conservative option that restores strength and appearance.
Inlays and onlays require two appointments, each about an hour long. The first visit involves tooth preparation and impressions; the second visit, about two weeks later, is for placement. Some practices may offer same-day treatment using digital technology.
These restorations are custom-made and require two visits. After the first appointment, you’ll wear a temporary inlay/onlay. Avoid sticky foods on that side until your permanent piece is bonded during your second visit.
Mild sensitivity may occur after placement. Avoid very sticky or hard foods for the first few days. Proper brushing and flossing around the inlay or onlay will ensure it lasts for years.
